[Text Messaging in Japan]
Most countries use SMS to send and receive text messages. Japan, however, uses and email based system. Instead of sending a text message from one cell phone number to another cell phone number the message is sent and received using an email address assigned to the cell phone. Therefore, you will primarily hear people in Japan refer to Text Messaging as Email.
Each tiphone package comes equipped with instructions on how to activate the Email feature upon arrival in Japan.

[About Packet Telecommunication]
The method that divides information into parcels is called "Packet telecommunication." You will be charged according to the weight of data that is transmitted instead of the amount of time used. Data transmission will cost approximately .03¢ for 64 full size characters. For example, a full size character is equivalent to 2 bytes, and a half size character is equivalent to 1 byte. 1 packet transmission consists of 128 bytes. Therefore, 64 full-size Japanese characters can be sent in 1 packet. However, if email addresses and pictographic characters, referred to as "headers" are also included in the transmission, unfortunately less than 64 characters may be sent.
When you view a web site, you will receive not only characters and graphics, but also other information. Note that the package includes not just the characters, but also their color and position on the screen. |
